Social Media Marketing Demands a Different Marketing Mentality
“Can you use the Social net (social media and social networking programs) to market your products and services?”  “Absolutely!”  You can do this successfully only if you adopt a new marketing mentality.  There are two key ingredients to social media marketing are; (1) Giving up control; (2) Participation.  In this blog post, I will talk about your need to “give up marketing control” if you are going to successfully use the social media marketing to promote your business.
Interruption Marketing
The traditional model of marketing and advertising is an interruption model. Ads, phone calls and advertising messages come from every direction asking us to buy their products.  Even the more sacred places are no longer private! Beyond asking, the interruption model often manipulates people into buying with new claims bigger than the last claim.  “We are going out of business. Everything must go.  Prices reduced by 50%.  You get this product absolutely free; you pay only for shipping and handling.”
People no longer believer these types of marketing. People have fought back with Do not call lists, spam filters, TiVo’s and other mechanisms to stop the interruptions and the advertising noise.
Attraction Marketing
Recently, there has been a shift towards attraction marketing and advertising. Instead of focusing on your company’s product, you focus your customer’s problems.   By focusing on their problems you attract them to your business solutions.  “Do you have a weight problem that has not been solved by the so called miracle diets?  Then try our solution where hundred of people like Betty Smith (testimonial) have lost weight and managed to keep the pounds from reappearing.”
Attraction marketing and selling have become increasingly popular as businesses shift from product driven marketing to customer focus marketing.
Social Media Marketing
Social media and social networking programs demand that you give up the traditional marketing hat—“I am in charge!”  Like other participants on a social media program, you are an invited guess.  You come as a guest to participate with others not to manipulate or control them.  No one is in “charge”.
You can take on an influencing role by participating with the social group. Your primarily skill is listening.  You listen for what people are saying.  You make contributions.  You make suggestions.   You ask questions.  You provide valuable insights from you base of expertise.
You essentially give up control.   You are no longer in charge of the marketing and advertising on the Social net.  New rules for social media marketing continue to be written each day.
Conclusion
If you think you can go to a social networking group and blast your business in front of others, you will be shut out.  Worse, people will simply ignore you. The key is to come as a person of influence.  When you do this, you can have some success on the Social net.

I was just talking with my (recent college grad) son today about getting active in LinkedIn. My advice was to become a resource for others, singly and in groups. It’s the old “they don’t care what you know until they know you care”.

Funny thing about that is, with this approach, you begin to perceive of yourself as part of a mutual and collaborative journey for success (which is quite fulfilling!) rather than as a person who is trying to get other people to do what you want them to do.
